Someone got carried away all right…to jail.

Per local affiliate WTRF, the Ohio lawman found guilty last month of snooping around the home of Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick's surrogate searching for souvenirs that he tried to sell to the tabloids was sentenced Tuesday to two years and eight months in prison.

Suspended Martins Ferry Police Chief Barry Carpenter resigned from his post two weeks ago following his Nov. 23 conviction for receiving stolen property, theft in office and tampering with evidence in connection with the June break-in at the residence of Michelle Ross.

Ross, who gave birth last June to the celebrity couple's twin girls, was not at home at the time of the incident. But she testified in open court that when she returned from the hospital, she discovered items misplaced, including a plaster cast of her belly, and missing ultrasound pictures and various surrogate documents with tax information.

The copper was later caught red-handed on audiotapes recorded by internal affairs investigators admitting he entered the house when he saw a basement door ajar and subsequently "secured" it. But two paparazzi took the stand and told the jury that Carpenter had approached them looking to hock the mementos for cash.

The policeman did catch a break, however: He could've gotten the maximum—six years in the slammer. And he was also acquitted on charges of burglary and unauthorized use of property or services.

His attorney said he plans to appeal the sentence.

Carpenter's comastermind in the crime, Bridgeport Police Chief Chad Dojack, is scheduled to stand trial on similar charges in January.

Whitney Houston: Back on Drugs?



She cleaned her act up for quite sometime, but now it is being reported that friends of Whitney Houston are worried that she’s gone back to using drugs.

According to a tabloid report, the “Million Dollar Bill” singer’s recent erratic behavior has sparked cause for concern.

“Everyone is worried about her,” a source said. “Whitney seems to go from being a nervous wreck to being completely out of it in a short period of time — just like she did when she was freebasing and using crack cocaine.”

The source continued, “She is still drinking and with Whitney, alcohol and drugs have always gone hand-in-hand. She’s worked so hard to get back on top. It would be tragic for it to go up in smoke because she can’t stay clean.”

Ms Houston has publicly admitted to battling drugs for years.

What could make 'Sherlock Holmes' and all of its bare-chested (and perhaps not-so-straight) detective work even sexier? How about the addition of Brad Pitt in the sequel? Yep, you heard it here first: Papa Pitt is set to reunite with Guy Ritchie once things get underway on the 'Holmes' sequel.

After 'Sherlock Holmes' managed to uncover more than $65 million in its opening weekend, 'Sherlock Holmes 2' is being planned with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law already committed. But the big surprise will be the addition of Brad Pitt as Professor Moriarty.

"The director, Guy Ritchie, loves Brad," an industry source tells me. "He has worked with him before and thinks he is one of the most underrated actors working today. Guy knows that everyone thinks of as a Pitt as a pretty boy and can't wait to turn him into the world's greatest supervillain. It will definitely make the sequel a must-see."

Pitt and Ritchie worked together on 2000's 'Snatch,' in which Pitt played a mumbling, can't-understand-a-word-he-says Irish gypsy fighter. He definitely wasn't a 'pretty boy' in it, and hopefully that's exactly what Ritchie can pull out of him again.

As for Brad, an insider tells me he's "very interested in taking on the role and happy they aren't considering his kick-ass partner Angelina for the part."

The basketball legend, who previously hosted the show back in 1993, will guest on the Jan. 9 show, with Alicia Keys providing the music. Weinstein Co sees "Nine" losing ground at theaters




LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - It gained early success on the awards circuit, but the star-studded musical "Nine" will likely be pulled back from hundreds of smaller U.S. cities, after disappointing box office and lackluster reviews.

After playing in 1,400 screens last weekend, the Weinstein Company, which is behind "Nine", said on Tuesday it expects the movie to play in 800-900 screens in big U.S. cities in coming weeks.
 

"The movie is performing very well on about 890 key screens," David Glasser, an operations executive for the independent Weinstein Company told Reuters.
 

"The movie's doing well in those areas and obviously in some smaller cities, it was not doing as well," Glasser said, adding that the studio expected "Nine" to perform well in the weeks ahead.
 

"Nine" was one of the most anticipated movies of the year and cost an estimated $64 million to produce. But it finished eighth at the North American box office on its second week last weekend with a modest $5.5 million in ticket sales.

The poor showing came despite five Golden Globe nominations for the Federico Fellini-inspired song and dance spectacular whose cast includes Oscar winners Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz, Sophia Loren, Judi Dench and Nicole Kidman.
 

Harvey Weinstein, who earlier this year sought restructuring advice for his cash-strapped independent Weinstein Company, has long made a strategy of turning awards show buzz into box office success.
 

Movie industry watchers had expected "Nine" to finish in the top five over the Christmas holiday weekend in a crowded field that included action films "Avatar" and "Sherlock Holmes."
 

"Nine" opened in limited U.S. release on December 18 and expanded widely on December 25.

The baby son of Irish actor Colin Farrell and his girlfriend, the Polish actress Alicja Bachleda-Curus, has been baptised in Poland.

Polish newspapers Fakt and Super Express printed photographs today of the couple in a church in Krakow during the baptism.

They were pictured in the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary during the baptism ceremony of their first-born son Henry Tadeusz Farrell, who was born on 7 October.


The actress' mother, Lidia Bachleda-Curus, confirmed that the baptism took place yesterday afternoon, but did not give any more details for privacy reasons.

But there’s a gentle giant among Hollywood’s humor powerhouses who doesn’t get nearly enough props: Harold Ramis (Egon from Ghostbusters). Arguably, the man’s responsible for writing and directing more classics than Mel Brooks (National Lampoon’s Animal House, Stripes, Caddyshack, Vacation, Back to School, to name a few).

In the aftermath of the alleged ransacking of the Manhattan apartment they shared, Jon Gosselin and ex-girlfriend Hailey Glassman continue to fling accusations at each other -- via their lawyers.

On Monday, Gosselin's attorney Mark Jay Heller told RadarOnline.com, "Hailey Glassman is going to jail, it's as simple as that." Now Glassman's camp -- who called the incident a publicity stunt -- is firing back.

"For an attorney to go out there and say someone's going to jail when they're not even arrested -- that's just irresponsible," Glassman' lawyer Stephanie Ovadia tells PEOPLE. "That is the most ludicrous, ridiculous, unnecessary statement I have ever in my life heard."

Of the investigation into the apartment trashing, Ovadia says, "All the police have done so far is fact-finding. They're trying to figure out what occurred here -- if anything -- other than two people who were living together breaking up."

Ovadia confirms that both Glassman and her mother have met with officers from the NYPD to discuss the incident.

According to her camp, Glassman did take items from the apartment, on which she split the rent with Gosselin -- but everything she took belonged to her. Gosselin "told her the apartment would be padlocked because he had not been paying rent, and she should go there and take whatever she wanted," Ovadia tells PEOPLE.

Asked about the fingerprint and handwriting analysis that Gosselin's lawyer has claimed is being conducted on the note Glassman is accused of spearing into Gosselin's dresser with a butcher knife, Ovadia says: "I don't believe there's anything to be concerned about. And I don't know of any notes. Again, I know nothing about any butcher knife. I can't even add to that nonsense."

Kim Kardashian is embroiled in a legal battle with a diet cookie manufacturer after branding its sweet weight loss treats "unhealthy."

The "Keeping Up With The Kardashians" star kicked off the fight with bosses at Dr. Siegel's Cookie Diet Company, accusing them of falsely claiming she was endorsing their brand.

CEO Matthew Siegel, son of the celebrity doctor behind the weight loss program, countered by filing his own lawsuit in Miami Dade County, Florida, on Tuesday morning - after discovering the star used her Twitter.com blog to claim Dr Siegel's cookies are unhealthy.

Siegel claims Kardashian had "commercial motive" for the attack because she is a spokesperson for a rival weight loss program QuickTrim.

He tells RadarOnline.com: "We received a letter a week ago asking us to remove a link to a news story (that we did not write) on our website that implied she was using and endorsing our product. And although we did this we discovered that more than a month before she had made her comments on Twitter claiming our product was "unhealthy" while somebody also leaked a letter from her lawyers to our company to a celebrity website."

Siegel is seeking unspecified damages against Kardashian.

Sean 'Diddy' Combs is helping revelers ring in the New Year safely by providing free transportation services in New York and Las Vegas.

The generous rapper is handing out thousands of subway passes and vouchers redeemable for taxi rides in the Big Apple and Sin City as part of his Safe Rides program, which he launched last year.

He says, "New York stands as the world's icon for a New Year's Eve celebration and Las Vegas is the biggest party destination in the country."

"By bringing this program to both of these great cities we will continue to show the rest of the country that a sophisticated holiday celebration doesn't end when the ball drops, but when everyone gets home safely."

George Clooney is handsome and savvy, but he’s also self-aware when it comes to his ladies-man reputation. When he signed to play an eternal bachelor in his latest film, Up in the Air, directed by Jason Reitman (Juno), he immediately saw parallels between the character and himself. “Jason came to my house and brought the script and I read it,” Clooney says. “There were some things that sounded like they were taken from a Barbara Walters special that I had done. I’m not completely unaware of people’s perceptions of me. I sort of felt like, if you were ever going to deal with it, this is probably the best way to do it and the best person to do it with. If you can’t point at what people think are your shortcomings, then you’re boxing yourself in.”

He’s also particular about not allowing a body double in his films, even for the split-second shot of his thumb on a suitcase handle in Up in the Air. “I bite my cuticles so I’m always ashamed,” he admits. “But when you see somebody else’s hand come in and it’s got, like, different fingers or hairy knuckles, it doesn’t look right.”
